<image:caption>Liz Palmer Editor’s Note: As a kid, I read Brat. It made me feel like the youth in Louisville mattered and that we had the power to change things. And now here I am all grown up and a woman launching her own publication on the eve of Brat’s 25 year anniversary. I reached out to Brat Founder and Editor-in-Chief, Liz Palmer, to reflect on what Brat meant to Louisville and why it’s time to return our attention to the mouths’ of babes.</image:caption>

<image:title>Body Work by Jasmine Wigginton - Therapy</image:title>
<image:caption>“What does it mean to trust?” my therapist asked me. My mind drew a blank. “I do not know how to trust myself.” She asked me to visualize the simplest parts of my day, “What can you depend on to happen daily?” I tell her I trust my cat will wake me up every day to feed him. I trust that he will do this, as it is our morning ritual. His body is simple. When he wants to eat, he slams a plastic trash can against the wall, chews bits of the plastic, and meows loudly until his needs are met. His body craves hunger. He trusts himself. After eating, he stretches his body in the sun, soaking it into his bones. He trusts his hunger. He trusts the sun. He trusts that he will disturb me daily to feed him, and I will. He has created a ritual. I tell her I trust anxiety. My body knows the sensation of tension in the neck. It understands the feeling of numbness. I have tried to counteract it with drinking, sex, and dancing. My body trusts fear. After this conversation, I began to make note of what my body feels beyond anxiety. When I am happy my cheeks warm up and I feel high from laughter. When I am angry, my body feels numb.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I begin my daily practice with plant caretaking, before attending to my other obligations. Prioritizing this time is an act of resistance. It is a reminder that my humanity comes before what society asks of me. I share my home with over 60 plants, mostly philodendrons, succulents, and hoyas. Soil is sprinkled across surfaces. It gathers under my nails and between my children’s toes. I lean on the practice of plant caretaking because of the daily lessons that plants offer.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I’ve become a tea enthusiast over the past year through owning and founding Sis Got Tea, Louisville’s first Black-owned, woman-owned, LGBTQ-owned tea café. I went from a McDonald’s sweet tea type of gal to a person who has a catalog of teas in her home. From sweet to earthy to bitter to smoky to herbal. I’ve got it all. Over the time that I’ve delved into the realm of this multidisciplinary drink, I’ve learned that tea is not only for oral enjoyment, but also for healing, grieving, celebrating, and for looking inward. I’ve learned that tea is both an outer and inner experience. So let me take you through the steps of the tea in ritual.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pandemic Proof Your Holiday Drinking by Dante Wheat - How could we drop the ball like this? What, are we drunk? Yes.</image:title>
<image:caption>It's no secret that booze has beared the cross for this country since 1933 and 2020 has twice the load. This is reflected in a record year for liquor sales despite restaurants and bars operating at a fraction of capacity. Pair that with one of the main side effects of a global pandemic being impaired judgment, and you have a recipe for disaster. Need proof? With the exception of five states, we're seeing ongoing and even rising drinking and driving accidents and arrests. It's clear that we can only see our present situation as a society. We are not visionaries. That's why we are making it a priority to see friends and family now versus taking steps to insure they are here once we are past this. Working is not our issue. It's what we do once our guards are down. It is how we act when it's time to decompress and cope while we navigate these uncharted waters. That's how we have lost our way, and that's what has us in the situation we are in now.</image:caption>

<image:title>Pandemic Proof Your Holiday Drinking by Dante Wheat - ‘Tis the season to get toasted…</image:title>
<image:caption>The Holiday season is upon us -- the drunkest time of the year. Everyone will want to see you, because pandemics aside, we simply MUST stick to capitalist traditions, and the opportunity for sketchy situations will be very abundant. It is imperative to be proactive and plan to avoid making the wrong decisions on temporary events that can cause permanent damage. So how do we deal? What can we do to drink, not drive, and share experiences with one another? Let's bounce back to that seemingly idyllic time between March and June of 2020 but spice up our options a bit -- perhaps even make them more relevant for the weird-ass holiday season we're about to experience.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food Justice & Bad Advice by Shauntrice Martin - Ms. Wanda Wilson Phonograph Farms at Reevesville</image:title>
<image:caption>Many Louisvillians have never been to Paducah. As Black Market continues to meet Black farmers from across Kentucky, I’ve been honored to learn from Ms. Wanda Wilson, who connected Black Market KY with our premium organic eggs. Her son George Wilson is the owner of Phonograph Farms at Reevesville—more than 120 acres of beautiful farmland in Paducah, KY. It’s where you’ll find the scenic Rustic Nights events hosted by former retired star George Wilson, (Ms. Wilson’s son). When asked about the guidance she’s been given over the years, Ms. Wilson tells me that one piece of advice could have cost her family the farm, “A jack leg carpenter told us as farmers that we didn’t need a building permit to build our buildings. That was big.” In case you’re wondering, like I was, “jack leg” is the same as “jimmy-rigged” or “bootleg.” Thankfully she was able to salvage the lumber, but the labor was already lost. Over generations, Black farmers have dealt with systematic disenfranchisement. Through sharecropping and the Jim Crow era, many Black farmers had their land stolen—this has resulted in the loss of generational wealth. Ultimately, the Reevesville Farmers found out that the shady carpenter had worked for a competitor. Ms. Wanda and her family embody the sheer brilliance of Black ingenuity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Food Justice & Bad Advice by Shauntrice Martin - Tammy Hawkins Parkland Neighborhood Food Mart Rather than being blessed with million dollar forgivable loans from her parents or having the benefit of an inheritance, Tammy was instead gifted with grit. She is truly here for the community. As a food justice advocate, she has been an absolute asset in the West End. For her, it wasn’t as much about bad advice, but the lack of advice overall, “When I started, I didn’t have a lot of people to get advice from. I learned through trial and error. I grew my businesses through experience.” For Tammy, the worst business advice would have been to solely rely on others or wait until someone gave her permission. She is one of the most underrated business owners in the state. She has been so humble for such an accomplished entrepreneur. It’s exciting to see her food mart thrive despite the pandemic. I won’t confirm or deny whether the folks giving all this bad advice were men, but I think you can take a wild guess. Here’s what I noticed — these women continued to push. And they had community support. As food justice advocate Karen Washington teaches, we are living in a food apartheid and it is imperative that we address all the intersections of food insecurity. These three Black women are making strides and we have a responsibility to follow in their footsteps, instead of taking advice from those who are unwilling to invest in our success.</image:title>

<image:title>LIFE//DEATH - Remember Me By Joshua Gonzalez</image:title>
<image:caption>Other than an altar and honoring the dead, I didn't know much about the Dia de los Muertos. My parents talked about how they celebrated back in Mexico growing up, getting together with family and neighbors taking fresh flowers to the tombs, bringing a mariachi and taking their loved one’s favorite meal or beer. The tradition didn’t continue for them out here in the states though…. There was a part of me that felt silenced, at the core I was this human whose Mexican identity was such a big part of him but there was no room or space for that part to be known in the good ol’ country town of LaGrange, KY.</image:caption>

<image:title>LIFE//DEATH - Your Therapist Has A Therapist by Ariel Brooks</image:title>
<image:caption>This is the worst part of what I do now and what I’ve always done. Watching folks fall through the cracks of a bridge it took all of their might to take their first steps onto. The mental healthcare power structure is an inverted triangle and at the very bottom are the people who barely make enough money to survive, but too much to qualify for any help that the system swears up and down is there for those who need it. What we forget when we encourage people to “get help” is that competent care is hard to find and even the most basic of services are never cheap.</image:caption>

He lived in Austin, Texas for a few years where he managed crews for the SXSW festival and coordinated farmer’s markets for the Sustainable Food Center. <image:caption>In detailing their day-to-days, Phelix, Lia and Marla all make it abundantly clear how much tireless work goes into online sex work. There is strategy when it comes to what you charge, when you post, how you post, who you connect with on the platform (many Only Fans sex workers engage with each other and share content, which helps new creators get a leg up).</image:caption>

<image:title>COUNTERCULTURE ft. Guest Editor Erica Rucker - Trans & Menopausal By Austen Smith</image:title>
<image:caption>Menopause stories are often white-washed and drained of the color and textures that would make it feel tangible to the trans and gender non-conforming folks who go unrepresented, yet whose futures are more immediate and more dependent on every facet of systemic change. When we think of menopause, the profile image is that of a cisgender woman, above the age of 50, and probably white. But I am an almost-thirty black, queer, transmasculine, and non-binary person. I’m also menopausal.</image:caption>

<image:title>The Visibility Project - Alivia Blade</image:title>
<image:caption>“I am an artist that literally enjoys trying everything!” shared Louisville artist Alivia Blade, when asked about the future. Alivia Blade first began to publicly display her art through collaborative works while attending Columbia College Chicago from 2015-2017. Last year, she started the journey of sharing her personal creations with the world, recently utilizing hair and hair products for a series of sculptures. To Blade, visibility is especially important for marginalized people. She told me, “The stories of Black and brown people have been considered to be optional, secondary and unimportant, but if our stories are taken away, or aren’t seen as necessary, we all forfeit getting a true and full picture of life and what people’s lived experiences actually are. We need reminders that the stories of Black, non-binary, queer, trans, and differently abled folks are worthy, real, and need to be told. Our stories should definitely be prioritized as we live in a society that consistently ‘others’ our stories and prioritizes whiteness.” She added, “I also hope that my art is healing for Black women-identifying people specifically. I hope they’re able to see something that they relate to or something within my work that makes them feel seen and affirmed; something that makes them feel less alone in their experiences; something that makes them feel understood; something that makes them want to celebrate themselves and their own stories.” Alivia Blade’s work can be seen on her Instagram profile @aliviablade</image:caption>

<image:title>The Visibility Project - Kala Lewis</image:title>
<image:caption>“It just looked so cool and fulfilling to see these people bring these characters to life. To give them personalities and put them in fantastical situations that you could still resonate with. It was connection that moved me to illustrate. To want to communicate with my audience and make those deep connections,” shared Illustrator Kala Lewis, looking back on her beginnings. Kala Lewis is a lifelong artist who took the leap towards visibility in 2019. Her fantastical illustrations transport you to the world of her choosing with just a single glance. Lewis creates in a field that is historically dominated by white males, and said, “As a Black illustrator and artist, I know how important it is to see creative works by artists who share your identity. It’s why my illustrations will always feature all kinds of Black people. I’m hoping my creations reach other Black individuals in the ways that others have before me. I want to push the narrative for Blackness toward places outside of just our trauma. Hell, to even places not based in reality. I’m a truly nerdy and dorky person at heart, so I want to be able to share creations around Blackness that allow us to be magical beings if we want to, to be space outlaws if we want to, or to even simply just BE if we want to.” She also described how visibility and representation can begin at home: “I don’t think I would be the illustrator I am today without my parents. Or their willingness to allow their child to be creative. I was never told that I couldn’t pursue art, but rather I was encouraged. My mother loves Black literature and plays. My father was an amateur photographer with albums full of pictures he’s taken over the years. Both my parents loved music and appreciated Black art. It was almost inevitable that they would have an extremely creative child.” Kala Lewis’ work can be seen on her Instagram profile @kalapotatoart, and you can support her artistic journey at https://ko-fi.com/kalapotatoart0797</image:caption>

<image:title>The Visibility Project - Isiah Fish</image:title>
<image:caption>“My poems help me express the ineffable. They are the medium in which my imagination gets to party. They reveal to me (& others) what my obsessions are, where my heart is, how my pain & joy can co-exist in a field under a burnt out moon. My poems are mirrors, revealing a different kind of picture back to me, even if the poems aren't autobiographical.” Isiah Fish is a Louisville-based poet who began sharing their work in readings and open mics as a teenager. Their passion grew through college, before earning their MFA in poetry in 2019. They recall early inspirations Alysia Harris & Jason Bredle saying, “Alysia Harris had me crying like a baby when she performed ‘Paris in the Rain’ at an event at WKU with the Strivers’ Row poetry collective. She's the best performance poet I've ever had the pleasure of hearing in my life, still. Jason Bredle's poetry was the wackiest, most surreal, most fun thing I had ever read up until that point. His creative freedom is astounding.” To Fish, visibility is simple: “I feel like nowadays if you want to be visible, you can be. We have magical internets in our pockets and anyone can be a broadcast baddie. I'd like my poems to especially reach queer folks, folks who like to laugh, folks who dream of beauty & have felt the chill & sting of love, and of course, Oprah.” Isiah Fish can be found on Instagram and Twitter @sloppiejoy. They also recently played the part of Benvolio in Actors Theatre's Romeo & Juliet 2020, and added, “I'm also available for hire. <image:title>The Visibility Project - Tyler Curth</image:title>
<image:caption>“Poetry has not only been a major tool for me in terms of self-expression, but it serves as a way for me to untangle myself, to untangle our increasingly complicated world, to record the emotional landscape of myself and inevitably the people and events that show up in my poems.” Tyler Curth is a visual poet and musician from Louisville who combines his passion for poetry, drawing, film, and viola into personal works of art. After earning his MFA in poetry in 2018, he learned how much more a poem could be. He says, “I've been obsessed with video poems lately, which is a pretty new genre of poetry that makes it possible for me to combine all of my artistic endeavors into one piece or project.” Curth shed light on how visibility can be a double-edged sword saying, “I have had to very intentionally make visibility take a back seat in terms of priority. I used to get so depressed by the nature of trying to get my art out into the world that it would literally take me weeks to start writing again if a magazine rejected something, etc.” He added, “Of course, I hope my work reaches the far depths of time and space, and crosses continents and cultures, but only when it is ready to do so. It shouldn't be too forced. For now, I am happy to create for the people around me who are usually at the root of my inspiration, plus whoever sort of stumbles upon me at any particular moment. I think the smallest, and usually most unexpected, moments when your art is reaching someone unlikely, or by chance, is when the art does the most work at changing a life or a perspective, or teaching someone something, or showing them something they didn't see before.” Tyler Curth’s work can be seen on his Instagram profile @twcurth22</image:caption>

<image:title>The Visibility Project - Kendrick Jones</image:title>
<image:caption>“I hope folks don't just see my images. I want them to feel my images as well; the same way I feel the images of Gordon Parks, Ernest Withers, Joel Meyerowitz, Darcy Padilla, Kevin Mullins, and Bud Dorsey.” Kendrick Jones is a documentary/street photographer based in Louisville, KY. His candid works capture fleeting moments in time, fulfilling an urge he has had since childhood. “Around seven years old, I started buying disposable cameras to just shoot any and everything. The images were terrible and always shot from wild/weird angles but they were mine and every shot had a story. Growing up I always tried to find ways to escape my environment but through photography, I was able to learn to embrace my life and the lives of those around me.” For Jones, visibility was not an initial goal: “I have no formal training and never planned to get into photography beyond personal images for myself and my family. But with a push from my partner and other people, in 2018 I started sharing my work on social media. I'm still figuring out what creating for the public eye consistently looks like for me.” Those nudges towards sharing his work have forced him to consider what visibility means to him, but passion for the art remains the same. “I simply shoot life, real moments in time, forever framed, and I am honored if anything I capture connects with at least one person.” Kendrick Jones’ work can be found on his Instagram profile @kenjones.jpg</image:caption>

<image:title>The Music Hour - Bri x Ki - Kiana Del</image:title>
<image:caption>Kiana Del is a passionate vocalist, songwriter, and educator hailing from the valleys of Carrollton, KY. Throughout her early life, many fields were revealed to her, however music has always been the only calling that made her feel whole. Kiana uses music to tell the story of our complex humanity, and to foster a safe space for others to create freely without the barrier of judgement. She carries her knowledge over to the community by teaching vocal technique in her home studio, providing accessible virtual spaces to listen and learn, and by teaching community workshops on songwriting, the intersection between music and visual art, and general vocal health. She is the Engagement Manager for Music Education at Louisville Public Media by day and can be found performing her own compositions in local and regional venues with her band Kiana & the Sun Kings by night. Kiana strives to continue weaving the importance of community and activism into her music.</image:caption>

<image:caption>As I get older, I have this recurring epiphany that the world is not designed for me. As a writer, one of the biggest pieces of advice I’ve gotten over and over again is to let myself be honest in my work; it’s supposed to be powerful to lay myself bare and let my readers see all of the pain and glory stitched into a piece. One of the largest consistent points of praise I receive is about the amount of honesty and ache in my work. But as a Black writer (especially being queer / trans / femme) this feels counterintuitive -- what would be brave for a white author, here, often feels like selling out to me, no matter how intrinsic my motivation is.</image:caption>
