Old South Louisville

Before — the luxury boxes of Churchill Downs loomed over what use to be a community;

there was old South Louisville, not the place of stone mansions but wood shotgun homes.

Before these homes housed folks that worked for Churchill Downs and L&N railroad.

Now, when you stand on this ancestral land you hear their whispers above the silence of vacancy.

Before blocks became only two to four homes, lots of hot, soft black asphalt pavement, and

graveled, weedy dirt devoid of rose bush, peach, cherry, apricot, plum and apple tree with fences

children climbed claiming their sweet ripe fruit and were casually, chased and chastised away.

Before — their white iron gate was put up a barbed wire fence stood there; where we

children held it up for one another to slide under in the brown dirt on our brown bellies.

Before — the streets leading to that gate were blocked from traffic entering and exiting.

Families yelled, “PARK” there, but now their voices echo over the vacant lots bouncing

off the racetrack’s glass and concrete collection boxes for luxury and million-dollar row guests.

Before — they became a one-way cash register and we became uninvited to a party in our backyard, we traveled back for black family Derby reunion in our little homes on their last turn.

Before — they left the men in the neighborhood

with fewer hots to walk on the backside of the track.

Before my neighborhood was abandoned of the family

I grew up skipping and running back and forth to and from.

Before the elders in our red brick Baptist church were my peers

and not the original backsliders and we were not a singing group.

We were a sinning group.

Before people traveled from near and far to sleep on our carpeted floors

for Derby Day and to eat granny Flo’s famous fried chicken and potato salad.

Before our family’s lot was Winnebago filled from five different states.

Now the lot is booked by internet; the absence and familiarity of family friends is felt.

Before at the sound of the bugle you stood a little bit straighter.

Now you crane your neck to watch it on Churchill Down’s big screen.
